Most of us can argue that we catch ourselves deep into our crushes, Instagram page or our “frenemies” twitter profile. We do digging which is often referred to as “stalking someone’s social media.” This stalking does not cause harm nor do the people we are “stalking” know they are being stalked, it’s quite innocent in most cases, I really believe this. With this being said, most people are aware of the new updates that are coming out on social media very soon. We are also aware of how currently stalking in the physical sense as currently defined and therefore the legal sense can be a major crime if a person is found guilty of doing it.
Today, I am comparing tracking others on social media to physically stalking a celebrity. For anyone who is not aware snapchat has recently created an update that is a map allowing people to see where one’s bitmoji is located. This has raised concern because potential for cases of stalking to get more intense and cause tragic circumstances are an issue. This application update allows

anyone who is your friend on snapchat to see exactly where you are, so precisely that the actual location of one’s house can be identified. This is dangerous when one has people following them that aren’t their real friends but rather more acquaintances on snapchat. It makes people vulnerable and potentially easy to access. This stalking can easily go from letting someone just see where you are to frighteningly having them end up at your house with bad intentions.

We see fans “semi-stalking” celebrities often. “Liking” all pictures, recent or not, trying to contact, and get the celebrity to engage on a personal level. It is supposedly innocent just as many think the snapchat maps are, but we all know that sometimes people take it too far. For example, Christina Grimmie. This young, rising, up and coming singer was performing on stage when she was shot and killed (Christina Grimmie shooting ). Little did she know that her killer had been stalking her over an extended period of time. This man spent every waking hour obsessing over Christina, watching every YouTube video he could find of her. Although this is internet stalking and seemed to be causing no harm, it left a young girl with a bright future dead because it eventually peaked manifested into physical stalking and murder .
This raises the question on why social media is allowing these types of crimes to be put into action. It seems innocent but as we all know everything starts off as innocent but has a chance of exceeding to danger. Christina did not plan on getting shot. Many of the younger generations are naive and willing to put lots out on there personal life unknowing what and who is watching. Social media is a great source to keep updated and post about your life, but to an extent and with security measures in tack.
